Digital Download Store for Bands

2

One of the things that took a lot of research when I first created this website was finding a decent Digital Download Store that I had complete control of on this website.  What I found is that PayPal.com is a fantastic resource for taking payments AND it costs a whole lot less than using the traditional credit card payment systems typically offered for hosting your own store.  I found two stores that I really like.  One is Free and the other costs about $68.00 for a single band license. Please note that both of these stores use PHP and a MySQL database.  I will provide the basic details of each one.

1-2-3 Music Store:  The 1-2-3 music store is a php script which you integrate into your website. Customize as required and then concentrate on selling your music downloads.  This is the script we use on our website.  You can see the store in action here http://www.stancrawford.com/store/.  The author of this script provides secure downloads, expiring urls for downloads and great user support.  Here are the benefits as listed from their website.

  1. Total control – you sell your music downloads yourself
  2. Global – access millions of listeners all over the world
  3. Independent – make the music you want and get the credit you deserve
  4. Easy to use – no programming knowledge required!
  5. Easy to customize – integrate the 1-2-3 music store into your website
  6. Scalable – equally well-suited to single musician or label with diverse acts

Brad Sucks Digital Download Store:  The name is weird I have to agree but the store is free.  This one uses paypal.com and an Amazon S3 account.  The down side to this is that with a free store the support is usually lacking.  If you are a little more web savvy this might be the option for you.  Some of the store’s features are:

Uses Amazon S3 for cheap and reliable bandwidth. $0.15 per GB-Month storage used and $0.20 per GB of data transferred. (now optional)

  1. Uses the Paypal shopping cart for a reliable experience.
  2. Buyers receive instant access to the files.
  3. Expiring URLs for your digital content.
  4. Quick links instead of requiring lengthy Paypal FORM buttons.
  5. Tracking in a MySQL database
  6. Quick handling of eCheck approval
  7. Thumbnails (optionally hyper-linked)
  8. Open source and totally free
From experience both of these stores are a good choice.  It really boils down to how much support you want to have with installation or possible troubleshooting issues once up and running.

Good luck to you with your digital store.
