Nepal: Diary 3 – Kathmandu
October 19: We left for Kathmandu, Nepal at 12pm. We had to get the airport at 9am because it was an international flight. The line was very long to get our boarding passes. Security was about the same as in the US. One of my brothers was asked why he had a long sleeve jacket on. I guess they are just as worried about security as we are in the states.
Once we arrived in Nepal we were bused over to the airpot terminal. The mountains are beautiful here. Kathmandu sites in a valley surrounded by mountains on all sides. At the airport we had to fill out visa papers, get a photo for our visa, wait in line to pay for our visa, and then wait in line to get our visa stamped on our passport. The line waiting took just about as long as the flight from Delhi to Nepal. The security in Nepal is very relaxed for westerners. We were waved through with no issues what so ever. All non western travellers were searched. Did I mention we had no hotel, car, or plans for our arrival in Nepal? We booked our hotel at the Airport! That was an experience. The place we are at is called Encounter Nepal. We are paying $15.00 per person, per night. The rooms have A/C, two single beds (my dad got a double some how), private bathrooms and HOT WATER.
A few of us had the chance to walk around after dark. This place is a VERY NICE change from India. The street vendors leave you along after you say no. There are shops everywhere! If you have ever been to little china in New York you have a decent idea what the shops look like. Just put about 10 more crammed in together. English is spoken much more clear here as well. Last night at least 4 people asked us to buy their weed. I was not expecting that one. The weather is about 77F and last night we did not need the A/C at all. That was a nice change.
We are currently discussing what we are going to do for the next eight or so days. On the table is plane ride to see everest, last resort bungee jump, chitwan national forest, and tons of sight seeing. Also the NPR (Nepal Rupee) can be stretched much more than the INR (India Rupee). In India $2.00USD was about 100INR. In Nepal $2.00USD is around 150 NPR. That is a great change but hard to get used to. We finally figured out indias money just to change currency. I am really looking forward to exploring this place. Nepal feels much less stressful, at least for now.
