Creating "Crazy Water" was an incredible journey of blending personal experiences, observations, and emotions into a collection of songs that I hope resonate with authenticity and depth. This album, for me, is a tapestry of life's highs and lows, all painted with melodies and lyrics that aim to connect with the listener on a personal level. Here's a look into the inspiration and process behind each song on the album's first half.
$30,000 Millionaire
"$30,000 Millionaire" is a social commentary on materialism and the illusion of wealth. The term itself refers to individuals who live beyond their means, projecting an image of affluence that doesn't match their reality. The inspiration for this song came from observing the societal pressures to appear successful and wealthy, even if it meant accumulating debt and living a facade. To be honest, I was really broke when I wrote this song, and I was pissed off I didn't have money. I channeled that anger into what became a $30,000 Millionaire. I originally posted the song lyrics on MySpace (yeah, that long ago) and made their front page for a few days. I had more messages than I could respond to, and the lyrics hit home with many people. It was the first time people responded to something I had a hand in creating, and it reinforced a path of connecting with people through words.
Rock on Saturday Night
"Rock on Saturday Night" captures the essence of youthful exuberance and the spontaneous, often chaotic nights out. It's a snapshot of a typical Saturday night where anything can happen, from awkward moments to fleeting romantic encounters. The song was inspired by countless nights spent with friends, filled with laughter, mishaps, and memorable experiences.
The verses tell stories of these nights, while the chorus encapsulates the thrill and excitement that come with them. This song celebrates living in the moment and the unpredictable nature of life. Writing and performing this track always brings back fond memories of carefree times and the bonds formed through shared experiences.
Crazy Water
The title track, "Crazy Water," is a love letter to my hometown and the experiences that shaped my upbringing. Growing up fifty miles west of the big city lights provided a unique perspective on life. I was born in Mineral Wells and moved to Alabama when I was four. I always called Mineral Wells my home and could not wait to return each year. When I was 15, we moved back to Mineral Wells. I still call it the place I grew up. "Crazy Water" refers to the local mineral water, known for its healing properties.
This song is nostalgic, recalling specific locations and memories from my youth. From working at Cales in Graford to the charm of Morrow's Grocery, each line is a tribute to the places and people who influenced me. The chorus highlights the deep connection and pride I feel for my hometown. Writing "Crazy Water" was a profoundly personal journey, allowing me to honor my roots and the community that supported me.
Crossing Plains
"Crossing Plains" reflects on life's journey and our challenges. The song was co-written with Mark Powell, and together, we wanted to capture the feeling of traveling through life's ups and downs. The plains in the song symbolize the vast, often lonely stretches we traverse physically and emotionally.
The lyrics speak to the resilience needed to keep moving forward, even when faced with hardships. The chorus offers hope and determination, a reminder that no matter how tough the journey gets, there's always a reason to keep going. Writing this song was a therapeutic process, providing a space to explore and express the complexities of perseverance.
Evelyn Rose
"Evelyn Rose" tells the story of a young woman navigating the struggles of self-worth and societal expectations. The character of Evelyn Rose is a composite of several individuals I've known who faced similar challenges. Her story is one of resilience and the search for identity and meaning in a world that often seems indifferent. Evelyn Rose came about because I asked my family about their favorite names one night. A sister-in-law immediately said, "I always loved the name Evelyn Rose." From there, the character was born.
The song's verses detail Evelyn's journey, from her battles with self-doubt to her eventual realization of her inner strength. The moon in the sky symbolizes hope and a constant reminder that there is always light, even in the darkest times. Writing "Evelyn Rose" allowed me to explore themes of empathy, understanding, and the power of self-discovery.
Here's To
"Here's To" is a celebratory song toasts the people and moments that make life worthwhile. It reminds us to appreciate the small joys and the relationships that bring meaning to our lives. The inspiration came from the idea that there's always something to be grateful for, even in tough times.
The chorus is a universal toast celebrating love, friendship, and the enduring human spirit. Each verse adds layers to this celebration, acknowledging the beauty in everyday moments and the importance of staying connected to those who matter. Writing this song was a joyful experience, allowing me to focus on the positive aspects of life and share that sense of gratitude with others.
Crafting the Album
The process of creating "Crazy Water" was both challenging and rewarding. Each song underwent multiple revisions, with melodies and lyrics evolving over time. Drawing from personal experiences, stories shared by friends, and world observations, I aimed to create a body of authentic and relatable work.
Recording the album was a highlight of the journey. Collaborating with talented musicians and Earl Clark, who produced the album, brought new dimensions to the songs, and hearing the tracks come to life in the studio was a surreal experience. Each recording session was a step closer to realizing a project that had been years in the making.
Connecting with Listeners
One of the most fulfilling aspects of releasing "Crazy Water" has been connecting with listeners. Hearing how the songs resonate with people and their stories about their experiences is incredibly rewarding. Music has the power to connect us, and through this album, I've been able to reach out and touch the lives of many.
Final Thoughts
Creating "Crazy Water" was a transformative experience. It blends personal reflection with broader social commentary. Each track holds a piece of my heart and soul, capturing moments of joy, struggle, and growth. I'm grateful for the journey and the opportunity to share my music with the world.
