"True Story" is a deeply personal, reflective work for me, released in August 2015, with six tracks that carry weight from moments of joy, struggle, and growth. It's an EP that explores a spectrum of experiences and emotions I've encountered over time, wrapped in melody and storytelling that's honest, sometimes raw, but always human. Writing this record wasn't just about making music; it was about painting a picture of life as I've seen it—sometimes bittersweet, but always with a sense of hope.
The opening track, "All Your Own," sets the tone for the EP. Co-written with James Dunning, this song captures that universal quest for individuality and strength. It's the kind of anthem that anyone who's ever felt lost in the crowd can relate to. It's about rising above the world's noise and making your mark—no matter how small you think it might be. The song reminds me of my journey, realizing that nobody will hand you a path—you've got to forge it yourself. It's about owning your destiny, no matter the obstacles. With lines like "Stand up straight, stand up tall, be the one to rise above it all," the song has this resilience that keeps pushing forward, which felt like the perfect way to start this collection.
Then there's "Rockstar." This one's more than just a nod to the dream of fame and fortune. It's got that edge of rebellion, but it's also self-aware enough to ask the big question—what if tomorrow was your last day? It's one of those tracks that, on the surface, feels like a high-energy, almost reckless pursuit of a larger-than-life existence, but dig a little deeper, and there's this underlying reflection on how fleeting it all is. I was tired of the grind at the time, of the nine-to-five monotony, and "Rockstar" was my way of expressing the desire to break free, to live life on my terms. It's fast, bold, and doesn't apologize for wanting more.
"Runnin' Scared" is where things start to get a bit darker. The song is driven by the feeling of uncertainty, that gnawing sense that something's chasing you—whether it's time, responsibility, or the weight of expectations. There's this imagery of being on a mountaintop, praying that your heart doesn't give out, and that feeling of holding on until the very last second. It's a song that came out of a place of feeling overwhelmed yet somehow still hopeful. It deals with our quiet fears, the ones we don't talk about but still carry with us. This one is more introspective, reflecting on relationships, life plans, and that ever-looming question of "why."
"Live & Grow" might be the most autobiographical song on the EP. It's a love letter to my family, the lessons I learned growing up with five siblings, and the simpler times that shaped me into who I am today. This song is about the foundation that keeps you grounded, no matter where life takes you. From those childhood memories of roughhousing and making up before bed to the warmth of home-cooked meals and the wisdom passed down by my parents, "Live & Grow" is about the journey of becoming and evolving. It's got a lot of heart, and writing it was a way of honoring where I come from while acknowledging how far I've come.
"Your Memory" touches on a different kind of memory that's hard to shake. It's slower, more contemplative, and deals with the lingering presence of someone no longer there. The song speaks to that bittersweet place where love meets loss and how memories can sometimes feel more real than the present. When I wrote this, I thought about how someone can occupy your thoughts long after they've gone. The chorus, with lines like "Your memory's knockin' down my door," captures the intensity of that lingering presence—almost like a ghost that refuses to leave.
Finally, we close out with "Fly Away." Co-written with Mark Powell, this one's got a bit of everything—it's got the rough edges of a barroom scene, the temptation to go off the rails, and ultimately, the decision to rise above it. It's a song about choices and our paths when life gives us a moment to stay or go. I remember writing this as a reminder that, even when things get tough, there's always a chance to fly away—to escape the weight of bad decisions and find a new way forward. It's hopeful but grounded, recognizing that while the escape isn't always easy, it's necessary.
"True Story" is just that—a true story of moments from my life, captured in six tracks that reflect the highs, the lows, and everything in between. It's a project that reminds me that every experience, good or bad, is part of the journey. These songs aren't just for me, though. I think that's what makes this EP resonate with so many people. It's not about me preaching or telling you what to feel—inviting you into the stories and letting them speak to your own experiences. At the end of the day, I think that's the goal of any songwriter—to connect through the stories we tell.
