Continuing the journey through the creation of my album "Crazy Water," the second half of the album dives deeper into personal experiences, reflections on relationships, and the complexities of human emotions. Each song tells a unique story, woven together to create a cohesive narrative. Here's an insight into the inspiration and process behind the remaining tracks.
This Functional Family
"This Functional Family" reflects the journey of finding home and understanding the true meaning of family. Writing it allowed me to reflect on my personal experiences and the enduring strength of familial bonds. This song was a homecoming for me and has become a bit of a family anthem.
Maybe She Loves Him
Co-written with Mark Powell, "Maybe She Loves Him" delves into the bittersweet emotions of seeing a past love move on. Mark and I wrote this in a restaurant on the back of a napkin. We had an idea based on a character that was about to get married but she was too blind to see the potential downfalls of her situation. It's the classic; you can't see the forest through the tree metaphor. This song was a way to process complex emotions and come to terms with the past, offering a nuanced perspective on love and letting go.
Moonlight in Mexico
"Moonlight in Mexico" captures love's enchanting and often mysterious nature. I was inspired by my fascination with how specific locations evoke strong feelings and memories. At the time, I was living near Waco, Texas, and it was a full moon. I kept thinking of the moon as a central connecting point for us all and used the full moon as inspiration for how we are connected. Writing this song allowed me to celebrate the magic of love and the special places that hold sentimental value in our lives.
Standing in Line
"Standing in Line" tells the poignant story of a man's quest for redemption and the cyclical nature of his struggles. Inspired by real conversations and observations, it is an autobiography of sorts. I met a man under a bridge one day in Houston. I've tried many times to follow up with the man who shared his story, but I have not been able to track him down since. The lyrics explore themes of addiction, faith, and the search for a second chance.
Writing this song was a deeply emotional process, allowing me to give voice to those who face similar battles.
Get Off the Table
Co-written with Tom Kennedy, "Get Off the Table" is a lighthearted and humorous song set in a honky-tonk bar. When Tom shared this concept with me, it was originally a poem. The inspiration came from nights out, where the unexpected often becomes the most memorable part of the evening.
Writing this song was a fun and refreshing break from more serious themes, allowing me to embrace the joy of spontaneous moments and the charm of small-town nightlife.
Better Days
"Better Days" is a reflective song about coping with loss and cherishing positive memories. Inspired by personal experiences of saying goodbye to loved ones, the song emphasizes the importance of remembering the good times and finding strength in those memories.
Writing "Better Days" was a cathartic experience. It allowed me to process grief and offer hope to others who may be going through similar experiences.
Crafting the Album
As I stated in the previous post, Creating "Crazy Water" was both an emotional and rewarding journey. Each song underwent multiple drafts, with melodies and lyrics evolving to best convey the intended message. Drawing from personal experiences, stories shared by friends, and observations of the world around me, I aimed to create a body of authentic and relatable work.
Recording the album was a highlight of the journey. Collaborating with talented musicians and producer Earl Clark brought new dimensions to the songs, and hearing the tracks come to life in the studio was a surreal experience. Each recording session was a step closer to realizing a project that had been years in the making.
Connecting with Listeners
One of the most fulfilling aspects of releasing "Crazy Water" has been connecting with listeners. Hearing how the songs resonate with people and their stories about their experiences is incredibly rewarding. Music has the power to connect us, and through this album, I've been able to reach out and touch the lives of many.
Looking Ahead
"Crazy Water" was a milestone in my musical journey, and it was only the beginning. The lessons learned, and experiences gained through creating this album have shaped my approach to music and storytelling. I'm excited to continue exploring new themes and crafting songs that speak to the human experience.
Final Thoughts
Creating "Crazy Water" was a transformative experience. It blends personal reflection with broader social commentary. Each track holds a piece of my heart and soul, capturing moments of joy, struggle, and growth. I'm grateful for the journey and the opportunity to share my music with the world.
